Makena, Maui

Makena, Maui is located hop-and-a-skip south down the road from Wailea, Maui but it's a world away from Wailea Resort. This was a hippie enclave during the 60's and early 70's, and the freewheeling spirit of the times is still partially evident in the area even though Makena is becoming more refined, sophisticated, and available to visitors. For one thing, "Little Makena" is a famous clothes-optional (unofficial). Makena is the last pristine coastal stretch in this part of Maui that hasn't yet succumbed to development. Makena is magnificent for bodysurfing and swimming. Whales frequent the area and come quite close to shore during the season.
